Thompson, Larry Leonard

Larry Leonard Thompson was born July 10, 1943 at the home of Mrs. Mary Kimball and passed away August 6, 2004.

Larry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Margaret and his six step-children; John (Sherry) Scott; Ken (Michelle) Scott; Irene (Dave MacDonald) Scott, Shena (Tom) Underwood; Robert (Margaret) Scott, Shanon (Dan) Heather; brother, Delmar Thompson; sisters, Eileen (Leonard) Anderson, Marie (Don) Stadnick, and Janice Thompson; 20 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry lived on the farm with his family (farm now owned by Dave and Judy Van De Sype) until he was two years old. The family then moved to another farm which is now part of the Robertdale Golf and Country Club. In 1949 the family moved into Radville where he lived until his marriage to Margaret on May 25, 1989. They then moved just out of town beside Highway 28.

Larry worked for Harold McNaught helping with his cattle as a young boy. One summer he worked for the town and for his brother-in-law, Don Stadnick who owned a mink ranch at Wabamun, Alberta. He worked delivering groceries for Carles store for almost 25 years and was projectionist at the Oasis Theatre. He also drove the school bus for fifteen years and delivered priority post for Canada Post for over ten years. In 1970 he started a sheep ranch and later started raising cattle.

Larry attended Radville Sunday School and belonged to the Beaver Patrol of the Radville United Church, a division of the Boy Scouts.

Larry didn’t have time for any hobbies but was an avid reader, reading over sixty books in the winter mostly history and pioneer stories.

Larry didn’t have time for much community involvement but for the last few years brought sheep in from the farm for the mutton busting event at the Radville Rodeo. Larry loved to travel but in later years did not have the time. He did make trips to California, Hawaii, Florida, Mexico and for years went on fishing trips in Northern Saskatchewan and he also loved to trap in the winter for mink and beaver.

For all Larry’s life he lived on a farm or in Radville. He loved the outdoor life with all his animals, (sheep, rabbits, cows, dogs and cats). When he had a chance at a bank job he accepted and then changed his mind saying, “I couldn’t see myself getting dressed up in a monkey suit every day and working inside!”

Larry was a very special person in the lives of his family, his wife Margaret, his stepchildren, his brother Delmar and his sisters, Eileen, Marie and Janice. He never refused to help if he could, always with a big smile. Times were hard for Larry, but he never complained. He felt that complaining never did any good and he always made the best of a bad situation. A shining light has gone out of our lives and he will always be dearly remembered.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. from Radville United Church, Radville, Saskatchewan with Reverend Shelby Kinrade officiating. Interment is at a later date.

For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Larry to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels, Weyburn, Saskatchewan.
